Title: July 26-Aug 6, 2017 - Trip to Newfoundland
Post by: HATE2W8 on August 09, 2017, 08:32:53 AM
Where to begin, even running the risk of becoming boring.  But, in my opinion, this was our trip of a lifetime, so excuse me for being excited about all we saw and experienced.  Incredible!!
So we began our trip with 3 Corvettes and 1 SUV (total of 11 folks from away).  We boarded the NL vessel at approx 5:30 p.m. on July 26 (Wed)with an arrival of approx. 10:00 a.m. the following day.  Smooth sailing, so that was a bonus.  Preferential treatment & parking for the Vettes, as the staff knew we appreciated them being careful.
Once on land, we are met by our escorts Glen & Michelle Best, Harry & Patsy Bartlett, Chris & Renee Barrett, who stayed with us pretty much for the full 10 day;  along with other Corvette members from the NLCC, who joined us here and there for runs and meals.   Our first stop was a tour of Castle Hill, Placentia, and then on to St John's for check-in.  As we started out on the TCH, we were welcomed by 2 of Canada's finest.  How did they manage to have the RCMP welcome us to the Province I'll never know.
Our hotel, the Quality Hotel Harbourview, was perfect and a good thing because we would be spending 7 nights there.  The attached restaurant, the Rumpelstiltskin, was where we ended up eating most of our breakfast and evening meals because we couldn't have asked for better service.
I can never describe the beauty of The Rock in ways that would send your mind into pictures that would justify what we saw.  Most of our photos are on the facebook page Greater Moncton Corvette Club and I've opened them to the public, so if you are a facebook user, please look those over.  I'm limited to what I can post on this website, so I'll select a few to help you picture the beauty of it all.
I've included a map of pretty much all the roads we toured, I'm going to guess at approx 2,500 kms.
Places we visited, and everything in between, include:
Castle Hill, Placentia, St John's, Cabot Tower, Johnson Geo Centre, Terry Fox Memorial, Mt Pearl, Petty Harbour, Cape Spear (& Lighthouse), Fort Amherst, Bonavista, Trinity, Clarenville, the Baccaialieu Trail, Dildo, Hearts Content (and the fantastic Transatlantic Cable Museum), Hearts Delight, Harbour Grace, Bay Roberts, Historic Brigus, Cupids, Topsail Beach, Worsley Park, Conception Bay, Quidi Vidi (stop at the brewery for a few purchases), Marine Lab, Outer Core, Middle Core, St Philips (where we had lunch By the Beach), Bay Bulls, Tors Cove, Cape Broyle, lunch at the Tetley Tea Room by the sea, Lord Baltimore's Colony of Avalon  (1621)at Ferryland, Goobies, Vernon Smith's car museum in Swift Current, walks through downtown St John's, and much, much more.  But for those of you familiar with Newfoundland, you will appreciate the sites and meals experienced with the above routes.
Over and above all that the Province has to offer, we were treated to a BBQ meet & greet at Glen & Michelle'e home, then a few evenings later,  those that had not yet been screeched in were given that experience at Glen & Michelle's home, along with a wonderful meal of Fishermen's Brew, chili and birthday cake in honor of Carla, who ended up celebrating her birthday for 3 or 4 days in a row.
It was with very mixed feelings that we headed back to the ship for North Sydney.  Most of us would have enjoyed staying a little longer, but the thought of seeing family, in particular grandchildren, made the departure a little easier.
A great ride home on August 6th and back to routine.
Thank you again to those from Newfoundland that took from their vacation time to travel with us, meet up with us, allow us to wash our cars at their homes, entertained us, and basically just indulged us.  No amount of money could have been paid for all they did and it will forever be remembered.

Angie

PS – included in my thanks is a personal thank you to the owner & staff at Hickman Chevrolet in St John's, when they were able to repair a flat tire, basically at the end of their working day.  They not only went out of their way for us, but also did not charge us.   Then, because they were closing, they allowed us all to use the wash bay for car clean up.
Participants from away included:
Roger & Angie Bourgeois, from GMCC
Terry & Carla Robblee, from PEICC
Errol & Dionne Callbeck, from PEICC – along with their daughter Amber, and her grandparents, Allister & Sonya, and Robert & Diane – a.k.a. " our pitt crew" .
