Sept 30-Oct 1, 2017 - Caraquet/Bathurst
« on: October 02, 2017, 04:30:05 AM »
The September heat wave we have been enjoying finally gave way to more seasonal temperatures as 9 cars left Moncton on a cool Saturday morning headed for the Acadian peninsula with stops in Rogersville and Miramichi.  We were met by additional members along the way so that when we stopped for lunch in Caraquet we numbered 17 cars.  After a nice buffet lunch we drove along the coast to the wharf in Shippigan where we parked the cars and gathered for a group picture.  From there, we drove a short way to Lameque and then backtracked and drove along the coast to Caraquet where we again parked the cars on the wharf for another photo shoot.  From Caraquet, we drove along the shore of the Baie de Chaleur to Bathurst and our motel for the night.  A group dinner was held at the Cast and Crew Gastropub and everyone seemed pleased with the food and the service.  The evening ended with a rousing few games of LRC, the official GMCC game.

On Sunday morning, we travelled to the Pabineau First Nation reserve near Bathurst where we learned some of the ways and the rituals of the Mi'gmaq community living there.  Our guide and teacher at the reserve was an elder of the community, Gilbert Sewell.  The following information is from the First Nation website: "Gilbert Sewell is a Mi’gmaq Elder, historian, folklorist, storyteller, guide, woodcarver, Mi’gmaq language instructor and small business owner from Pabineau First Nation, New Brunswick. He is the recipient of several awards including the NB Human Rights Award, The NB Eco Award, Orono, Main Museum Award, and the Canadian Merit Award – all attributed to his tireless dedication to sharing, expressing and teaching others about his Mi’gmaq culture."  It was a very moving and informative experience on the shore of the Nepisiguit River in an extremely beautiful setting.

After departing the reserve, the group drove to a local Tim Horton for a brief rest stop before heading to Dalhousie for lunch and then heading for home.

It was a wonderful weekend and special thanks go to Evelyne Volataire and Murielle Theriault for arranging our amazing Pabineau tour and other aspects of the weekend.  As always, thanks to Roger and Angie for all the time and effort they put into making these trips so memorable.

The most difficult part of preparing this summary was deciding which pictures to post.
