Sept 16, 2018 - Orchard, Dorchester, Sackville

Nine cars left Moncton headed for their first stop of the day at Belliveau's Orchard in Memramcook and there we met up with two more cars bringing us to 11 cars in total.  Fall harvest is in full swing at the orchard with lots of pumpkins, squash and gourds of every shape and colour on display.  Some folks took the opportunity to stock up on fresh produce while others just socialized and enjoyed the nice weather.
Our next stop of the day was at the Keillor House Museum in Dorchester, NB.  This stone mansion was built in 1813-1815 by Yorkshire immigrant John Keillor and it now houses period furniture, china and kitchen utensils.  Our guide was very knowledgable and the tour taught us a lot about life back in that time.
From there, we went next door for a tour of the former Dorchester provincial jail, site of the last double hanging in New Brunswick in 1936 when the Bannister brothers were hanged for murder.  The tour was excellent and there is still artwork and graffiti on some of the cell walls done by inmates.  The building is now privately owned and functions as a B & B where guests get to sleep in one of the cells!  Some claim to have had ghostly experiences in the building - who knows?
From the jail, we drove to Sackville for lunch at the Painted Pony Restaurant that is located in what was once the service department of the Lounsbury Chev Olds dealership in town.  There we enjoyed a very nice meal and for dessert, we continued on to the Trueman Blueberry Farms for some home made ice cream.  The only complaints I heard were about the mosquitoes - the ice cream was delicious!  From the farm, we took a leisurely drive back to Moncton on secondary roads to end a very interesting  and informative day.
